The 1998 '''Internet Tax Freedom Act''' was authored by [[United States House of Representatives|Representative]] [[Chris Cox]] and [[United States Senate|Senator]] [[Ron Wyden]], and signed into law on [[October 21]] [[1998]] by [[President of the United States|President]] [[Bill Clinton]] in an effort to promote and preserve the commercial potential of the Internet. This law bars state and local governments from taxing [[Internet]] access service. The law also bars multiple and discriminatory taxes on [[electronic commerce]].
